7 entrepreneur movies and series to watch on repeat

web design for life coaches

As a female entrepreneur, you may be a little obsessed like me when it comes to getting inspired by other successful business owners and how they scaled their way to success. Here are my favorite entrepreneur movies.

However, before I give you my personal recommendations, do bear in mind that some of the movies or series listed here not always have a happy or successful ending, but they have somehow taught me how to approach my business with a new perspective.

I hope you have your popcorn ready, because some of these are worthy of a weekend marathon! I have ordered them from my most favorite to least favorite. Spoiler alert, I will say what I loved most about each one so if you don't want to know the ending just read the titles.

1- Devil wears Prada

Hello Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), goddess of fashion, and editor in Chief of a fashion magazine in New York City. This character has always been a source of inspiration for me in terms of boldness, and aspiration in the fashion industry. She reminds me of several top management styles that exist in real life, and how intimidation, unfortunately, has a way to move people to become complete strangers. Which is why Anne Hathaway in the end makes a life decision to step away from the fashion world. This happens so many times in real life, where young regular people start a job and feel forced to live up the busy workaholic standards, and I loved how Andrea (Anne Hathaway) has the courage and perseverance to wait until she's empowered enough to let it all go.

On a fun fact, I religiously watch this movie once or twice a year.

2- The Intern

This movie is with Robert de Niro and Anne Hathaway (once again) and this time Anne Hathaway has a different role. She is the CEO of a fashion startup living the dream in New York City. She has a stay at home husband and struggles with work-life balance. Anyone who has a business can strongly relate with her character in terms of the passion that drives you everyday to never stop working. In this case, you relate with being a workaholic because you know what it feels to have your own business. But in the end, not building a work-life balance can lead to having family issues. The main character also has to struggle with having patience and working with an intern that is over 60 years old. He teaches her life lessons about formality, building talent and running a business, while she slowly becomes more down to Earth and values what she has in her present life.

3- We Crashed

Ok sorry for my obsession with Anne Hathaway, but this series available in Apple TV has all the exciting startup vibes to get inspired as an entrepreneur. In this case, Anne Hathaway (or Rebeca) stars as the wife of Adam (Jared Leto), founder of We Work. I don't love their personalities here, they are a little crazy, unorganized and spend most of the company's capital to foster the startup growth. Still, I wish there were more startup series on Netflix because I love learning about the history of how huge companies were born.

4- The Playlist

This mini-series is on Netflix and tells the story of how co founders Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon started Spotify, the Swedish music streaming app that is almost on every mobile device today. I love how this story tackles into the different perspectives of the key people that made the app and business possible because it outlines the difficulties and challenges of a fast-paced start up that had to revolutionize the music industry that was completely against music being free for people. It teaches us to be strict out about our standards (like Daniel was with his vision of the app hiring the top talent in the world to make Spotify what it is today) and it also teaches us why a successful company needs different key talent and systems to make everything happen.

5- Self made Madam CJ Walker

Sarah Breedlove, born on1867 and died on 1919 (played by Octavia Spencer) is a Netflix mini-series based on the true story of this African American woman who saw a business opportunity and turned into a millionaire. Her story is inspiring because it's about how she struggled with racism as Black entrepreneur who had hair growth problems. After she bought a product for hair growth from a peer Black entrepreneur, she proposed to partner with her and help her grow her business. This other person denied her offering and didn't want to be seen with Sarah because of her looks. This triggered a fierce competition between the two and made Sarah fight harder to make her dream business possible, and she did.

6- The Dropout

Based on a true story about the health company Theranos this mini-series is about Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) a female "entrepreneur" who dropped out of Stanford to start her company. In contrast to the other movies or series I mentioned above, this one showcases the insane lies and unethical business practices that she was able to hide while her company raised $700 million from venture capitalists. It almost feels like a scary real life "Black Mirror" type of series where you won't believe how far a human being can go to pursue wealth, fame and money. The takeaway is how her empowerment, messaging and sales skills were able to take her lies so far.

7- The Greatest Showman

If you're into musicals and love the almost fairytale endings, this movie is a great watch. The music lyrics are very empowering and inspiring, and it showcases the story of how Hugh Jackman builds his circus business while handling his family and traveling around the world.

I hope these movies inspire you to pursue your dream business and take the challenges, mistakes and learnings from each one to nurture your CEO mindset. Remember that building a business takes time, energy and effort. Make each day count.

Tools for Client Communication or CRM: 1- Moxie First on the lineup is Moxie (affiliate link) – simply the BEST customer relationship management tool that will help you stay in touch with your clients, manage leads, and streamline your projects like never before. It's like having your very own virtual assistant who never takes a coffee break! And the reason it’s #1 on my list is because it was specifically designed to not overwhelm you with setup like Dubsado, or over-complicate task management like Asana, Monday and similar. Their website says it and it’s true. Stupid good tools for freelancers, and I second that headline all the way! Main features I love: Ditch calendly, built in scheduling Ditch all your apps for forms, built in forms that can be connected to your website Ditch Notion, Asana or Trello, you can build your client projects inside Ditch Hello Sign and similar, you can sign your contracts here Ditch a checkout software, you can charge subscriptions, send invoices and recurring invoices here Time tracking Create email templates and replicate Dubsado workflows with a breeze Automations, streamline your client onboarding from form, to contracts, to payments with a built in visual automation editor way more friendly to look at than with Dubsado Mobile App, your business on the go Customizable client portal Visualize your lead pipeline and never miss out on following up I could go on, but this blog was supposed to be about other tools too, but seriously give Moxie a try I promise it’ll be worth your time and you’ll be cancelling at least 3 app subscriptions quickly! Thank me later ;) !
